Nice clip. But who was the paddler in the front of the pack in the white long sleeve…without a pfd…and stuck out like a sore thumb ?????
And the poor bugger with the blue deck that had a huge gawd awful weed on his rudder and never cleared it before he remounted !!!
Good job Bob on throwing the remount in. I will be doing lot’s of rough water remounting in the next month in preparation for the USSSC.

Nice blog and site. Even though I have the luxury of paddling in much warmer waters (Gulf of Mexico), I suspect you get much nicer conditions and waves to play in. You guys are lucky to have such an active paddling community that you can have the TNR series plus all the weekend races. Looks like fun.
Question about the race. I have read a lot about the tragic events that have happened in Howe Sound and in B’ham and understand the need for safety, but it would seem to me that all racers, regardless of craft, should have demonstrated competence at self-rescue. Any thoughts as to why only the surfskis were required to do the dismount/re-entry? In general, my paddling partners and I like the idea of integrating it into the race.
thanks.

Hi Steve, thanks for the kind words about the site…yeah, we are lucky to have a pretty good local racing scene here in the Vancouver area.
WRT your comments on all racers needing self-rescue competence…yes, that is certainly true. This one video of the most recent Deep Cove TNR is probably not giving a complete picture of the challenges this race series incorporates to test the skills of the racers. There are races at which all paddlers must execute a wet exit/re-entry. In recent years the number of surfskis in our community has grown rapidly, particularly among the regular TNR crowd…and it has been quite apparent that many of our thrill and speed seeking crowd have not been overly diligent in practising our surfski remounting skils. For this reason the Deep Cove TNR organizers make a point to more regularly test the remounting skills of the surfski racers.
In addition to the in-race remounting tests, Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak Center offers a wide range of sea kayak courses that cover all the necessary safety skills…these courses are very popular amongst the sea kayakers. Their surfski course hasn’t quite gained the same popularity…but there is nothing like being shown on video clumsily climbing back onto your surfski to motivate one to give this skill some practise.
