Race # 2 Jericho – PNWORCA Winter Series, OC-1 / 2 , surfski
Date: Saturday February 14, 2009
Race Description: All paddlers will start together from the Jericho Outrigger Canoe Club. Exact course will be determined by wind/tide conditions. Approximate distance will be 6 miles. This is the second of 7 in the winter series with the first 3 finishers in each age division earning points for end of season awards.
Event primarily for OC paddlers but we welcome surfski paddlers as well. We have historically offered cinnamon buns from Grounds for Coffee to the top man/woman in the surfski division and age group results count towards the winter series point race.
Registration: This is a PNW-ORCA/CORA sanctioned race. All participants must register and sign the waiver. Non-ACA/CORA members must pay an additional $10 fee and complete the CORA one-time waiver in order to enter the race. CORA annual individual membership is $25 for 2009.
Race Fee: $10
Host Club: Jericho Outrigger Canoe Club. Contact: Peter Forand (peterf@bcaa.com)
Facilities: Free parking, showers. Light refreshments & water will be provided

Proceed 300 meters to Discovery St. (Jericho Park West entrance) and turn right into the Jericho Sailing Centre Association parking lot.

Saturday February 14th 2009
Racing will start at 10:00 am
The 10 km race will start at 10:00 am (single 10 km loop)
The relay will start at 12:00 noon (2 laps of 5 km loop)

PNWORCA – Race 2 – Cancelled/Postponed
Extreme weather forecast conditions are forcing us to cancel Saturday’s race. Wind chill estimated @ -10 degrees Celsius. Too cold to paddle.With luck, we’ll get it re-scheduled later in the winter series.

Looking for a way to keep your hands warm, but not HOT, while preparing for the upcoming surfski racing season?
Local paddler Matt Kelly of Predator Helmets has some nylon pogies for sale, I think he has 8 pair remaining. The pogies are made of black nylon, have a velcro closure and elastic at the side openings. The price is $20. Contact sales@predatorhelmets.com for more information.
For those unfamiliar with the term pogies, think of mittens that you attach to your paddle, then you just slide your hands into the pogies and grab the paddle just like normal, but now you have a layer of protection against the elements.
Some folks have learned to dislike pogies often due to the fact that hands can get too warm in some pogies or sometimes due to the restrictive feeling of some pogies. Pogies made of a thin layer of nylon tend to feel quite comfortable and do not get overly hot inside, but they are quite effective at shielding hands from cold wind.
