Race Results: March 7 at Vancouver

Just before the latest Arctic front settled onto the Pacific Northwest, 46 racers took to the waters of English Bay at False Creek Racing Canoe Club’s race #5 of the PNORCA winter series. The huge Canadian flag at Vanier Park was flapping fiercely in the strong west wind. The combination of strong wind, cold air temperature and limited big water safety boat availability prompted organizers to wisely alter the course to a multilap race. The start/finish was at the dock near the Coast Guard Station with racers heading out of the creek mouth to make a left turn at the green channel marker then head out into the bay to round the sand barge buoy then make the downwind run back to a buoy off the start finish dock. The original plan was to do 3 laps but the race was shortened to 2 laps while the paddlers were on the course. The race distance ended up being just short of 9 km.
Katja and I paddled tandem surfski with a video camera mounted on my hat…here is some video of the race.
