Race Results: Round Bowen Challenge
Posted by bckcrainbow on June 12, 2009
The 10th annual Round Bowen Challenge was another terrific success on Sunday June 7. Bright sunny skies and warm thermal winds made for interesting paddling conditions. As was done last year, the course took racers in a clockwise direction around Bowen Island. The 10:30 am start time gave paddlers little to deal with wrt current as the ebbing tide was slack at noon. Wind and wind waves proved to be the biggest challenges to racers completing the 31 km distance…according to my GPS. The waves started soon after leaving Snug Cove, although they were not nearly as bouncy as last year’s race, they were still enough to require additional concentration to stay upright and to keep the boat moving well. Immediately after the start the tandem ski crews of Don/Eric and Morris/Jakub went to the front…these 2 boats (Fenn Elites) stayed together for the duration of the race, with Don/Eric setting the pace, and finished in a sprint to the line with only 1 second separating them…what an excellent race! And a new double kayak Round Bowen record was set in the process, winning Don/Eric $500 thanks to Bowen Island business sponsors REDESIGN TECHNOLOGIES Inc., THE RUDDY POTATO healthy and organic food store, and BOWEN BUILDING CENTRE Ltd.
From stories told over the scrumptious salmon BBQ and well earned beer, there were many excellent races taking place out on the course…multiple lead changes, inshore/offshore lines exploited and racers hitting the wall.
Actually the last 5 km was literally like paddling up a wall…the south wind picked up considerably over the last half of the race making for a fierce headwind to battle against in the final stretch to the finish back at Snug Cove.
There was also some great racing in the Round Bowen Outrigger Relay, with this event continuing it grow in number of participants. Check out roundbowenchallenge.com for full race results.

Thanks Jeff,
You and Katia had an awesome race. I tried my best to keep up with you guys but ran out of steam. I was quite disappointed that i couldn’t give Erik a better challenge too. Anyway i love the race and look forward one day to some huge surf on the south end of the island! Keep up the good training – you and Katia are definetly a force to be reckoned with.
ps. You do realise that that is the last time you will ever drop me again…….right!?
