2009 Surfski BC Race Series

Once again the SURFSKI BC RACE SERIES will track the results of competitors in designated events.

Series standings will be posted on the Surfski BC website throughout the racing season.

Perhaps local businesses will take up the opportunity to sponsor series championship prizing, until then racers will be content at competing for end of the season bragging rights!

Points are awarded to the top 15 places within each of the races as well as points awarded to all race finishers. The points system has been structured such that men and women compete together for the series championships, including a bonus points structure for female paddlers.

Men and women compete together for the following 3 series championships:

  • Overall Championship
  • Long Course Championship
  • Short Course Championship

Top 15 women finishers receive bonus points in addition to points for overall placing. Doubles partners both receive points for placing.

Women racing in doubles as mixed crews are not eligible for bonus points.

Length of the Lake racers completing more than 1 leg receive 5 bonus points for each additional leg.

Competitors in surfski and kayak will be eligible for points.

Men and women must compete in the same race for the bonus points system to be applied.

I am really pleased to see a point bonus for the women paddlers. Ignoring politics, it’s really more challenging in just the practical aspects for the gals. Gear-fit, technique knowledge base, mentors – just the whole big bad learning curve is hostile. I’ve had some fantastic duels with some of the most extreme ladies: Heather, DeAnne, Traci, etc. Without exception they are great competitors. In general it seems the female population is bringing some class to the sport. Since I started in the mid-80’s this thing is just getting better and better.

Reivers, the bonus system for gals was based on a popular triathlon event I watched on TV where men and women compete against one another. In the triathlon, the women’s field was given a headstart based on the previous year’s race results then the men try to catch the women. If I remember correctly it was a fairly even split between male and female winners of the race over its history. Both male and female competitors seemed to really enjoy the race format. In trying to create a SurfskiBC race series I was puzzled with how to create an interesting competition for the gals, particularly since there are so few women currently taking part in our races. Thus it seemed to make more sense to find a way to combine the men/women racers into a single competition. Yeah, we share the water with some awesome women surfski racers most of whom find themselves most often racing against men in our local events.

Good job Jeff. This will make it interesting for the ladies. As long as you don’t bring in a rule that we can’t ride you and Katia’s double wave then all is good!
